Discover Detroit intelligent Powertrain Management (IPM)

Use the momentum of your Detroit powered vehicle to maximize fuel efficiency

Building a fuel efficient solution into your powertrain is easy with Detroit® Intelligent Powertrain Management (IPM).

Intelligent Powertrain Management 6 (IPM6), which comes standard with the DT12®, integrates pre-loaded terrain maps and GPS into engine and transmission functions to know the route ahead, up to one mile. The main goal of IPM is to use the momentum of the truck most efficiently to reduce fuel consumption. New features incorporated with IPM6 include engine load balancing, improved map coverage and Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control which works in tandem with Detroit Assurance® 5.0 to deepen powertrain integration and safety.

Explore the Different Modes of IPM

Predictive Acceleration

  • Occurs when the engine increases to full power in order to exceed the desired speed prior to a steep ascent.
  • Helps compensate for ascent time in predictive acceleration mode.
  • The predictive acceleration logic will not allow the vehicle to fuel above the Road Speed Limit value.
  • Predictive acceleration is the only IPM mode that fuels above the set cruise speed.

Crest Coast - Regular Mode

  • The vehicle may get an eCoast event.
  • The vehicle may coast downhill in gear depending on the length and severity of the backside grade.
  • The vehicle speed is allowed to dip below set cruise speed.
  • The vehicle will recover to set speed on the backside of the hill.

Crest Coasting in Steep Mountains

  • On steep uphill grades where vehicle speed cannot be maintained under full throttle, IPM will attempt to crest coast even when the speed is below the under speed threshold.
  • The vehicle weight will also have an effect on how the coasting modes function.

 Dip Coasting

  • This mode occurs when a downhill grade is quickly followed by an uphill grade.
  • The vehicle could exceed the over speed threshold to conserve momentum into the next hill under an engine braking event.

Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control

  • Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control- Combines Predictive Cruise Control (PCC) with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) to better use kinetic energy and minimize brake usage when following a vehicle.
  • IPM will increase the distance between the vehicles to enable longer and fuel efficient coast or eCoast.
  • When approaching another vehicle (docking), IPM will decide if eCoast or engine brake is needed to avoid ACC interference.

Engine Load Balancing

  • The engine will hold constant torque over small, subtle grades that drivers may think are flat to reduce unnecessary engine load.
  • Engine Load Balancing will allow the vehicle speed to fluctuate (within the upper and lower limits) to reduce unnecessary engine load.
  • Similar to a larger hill, the truck would then pick up the lost speed by coasting or eCoasting on the downside of the subtle grade.

Improved Map Coverage

  • IPM6 covers 600,000 more road slope miles than IPM4, and of existing major highways and interstates it has increased by 35%.
  • Overall mileage increased from 255,854 miles to 903,512 miles
