Western Star Increases Capabilities for its Detroit Diesel Series 60 Tier 3-Equipped Trucks

New options add power, efficiency to Western Star 4900 and 6900 off-highway vocational applications

FORT MILL, S.C. — Western Star Truck Sales, Inc. today introduced two new options for Detroit Diesel Series 60® Tier 3-equipped Western Star® 4900 and 6900 truck models. Only available for off-highway vocational applications such as mines, quarries, oilfields, landfills and agricultural feedlots, Western Star is the only Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in North America to offer the Tier 3 engine.

Providing additional braking power and maximizing service brake life, the Allison 4700 with retarder option – ideal for Series 60 Tier 3-equipped 4900 and 6900 heavy haul applications – features a hydraulic brake release system, which slows or maintains steady speed on declines, allowing the operator to maintain control of heavy loads while reducing wear on the braking system.

In addition, Western Star is also offering a 1480 Front Engine Power Take-Off (FEPTO) option for Series 60 Tier 3-equipped 4900 set-back configured applications requiring front-mounted equipment. The enhanced power take-off provides higher torque, generating more power and efficient operation – ideal for agricultural feedlots.

"The availability of the Series 60 Tier 3 package to our off-highway customers not only reduces acquisition and operating costs, but also provides flexibility in vehicle packaging to satisfy a wide variety of vocational application configurations, allowing our customers to optimize productivity on the job," said Randy DeBortoli, director of engineering, Western Star.

The Series 60 Tier 3 engine features ratings of 500 hp and 1550 pound feet of torque, or 425 hp and 1475 pound feet of torque, and is built to handle the toughest of jobs. Only available for 100 percent off-road vocational trucks, the Series 60 Tier 3 features a single-stage turbo and no EGR.

Plus, the maintenance and operational costs of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and related Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) equipment associated with an EPA 2010 emission package is eliminated, making the Series 60 Tier 3 the ideal choice for off-highway applications that don’t require this technology.

The new Allison 4700 with retarder is now available to order for all Series 60 Tier 3-equipped Western Star 4900 and 6900 off-highway applications, and the 1480 FEPTO is now available to order for all Series 60 Tier 3-equipped Western Star 4900 off-highway applications.
