DETROIT – February 3, 2022 – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has again honored Detroit Diesel Corporation (Detroit) for achieving the highest level of performance in a program to conserve energy in manufacturing facilities.

Detroit achieved Platinum-level recognition in the DOE’s Superior Energy Performance 50001 (SEP 50001) program. This is the third time since 2015 that the facility has achieved this milestone and is one of only nine facilities in the United States that have reached Platinum status.

The SEP 50001 program certifies facilities that have achieved sustained energy management excellence. To be recognized, facilities must implement an energy management system that meets the ISO 50001 standards and demonstrates improved performance. Recognition is earned through the implementation of actions, processes, procedures, or advanced technologies beyond the requirements of the ISO 50001 energy management standard and the SEP 50001 program.

“Our commitment to sustainable efforts underscores everything we do; from product development and emissions reductions to operations, environmental leadership is a core part of our culture,” said Matthew Pfaffenbach, head of operations, Detroit. “Congratulations to the entire team who help Detroit achieve this honor, and for continuing to be trailblazers in sustainable solutions.”

Starting with the facility’s first ISO 50001 certification, the facility and plant engineering teams from Detroit parent company, Daimler Truck North America (DTNA), have collaborated with Detroit leadership to reduce baseline energy consumption and continuously improve energy systems. The team recently implemented a strategy to eliminate summer high-pressure steam loads, better regulate air handling and compressed air systems, identify and repair system leaks, and improve the building envelope.

In addition to the SEP 50001 Platinum recognition, the Detroit facility has been named a Green Leader by the state of Michigan, and in 2021 enrolled in DTE Energy’s MIGreenPower program. Participation allows DTE customers to attribute a percentage of electricity use to DTE’s wind and solar projects.

Enterprise-wide, DTNA is committed to climate protection. All manufacturing plants have achieved ISO 50001 certification and are working to improve energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. The company plans to make all vehicle manufacturing plants CO2-neutral by 2025.
