The proven 8.5L Series 50 engine is the smaller, four-cylinder version of the Series 60, with the same heavy-duty qualities. With a horsepower range from 250HP to 350HP, this was the ideal engine for applications where high torque and horsepower are demanded.
The time-tested DDEC® electronic engine control system ensures optimum performance and fuel efficiency with minimal emissions. Like all Detroit Diesel engines, the Series 50 was designed for easy and periodic maintenance to help minimize downtime and out-of-pocket cost. Along with optimum horsepower and performance, it’s hard to beat the Series 50 from Detroit Diesel.
The Series 50 was also adopted to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG) and became popular among transit buses in North America. The Series 50 sold 200,000 units between 1993 and 2005. It was also used extensively in trucks, motor homes, transit buses, motor coaches, construction and industrial equipment, as well as in military vehicles.
